چکیده

There are several technologies for providing broadband services over wireless and cellular networks. The fundamental one in the evolution from 3G to 4G is probably the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSPA) technology. There are many works in the literature tackling the problem of HSPA performance and capacity. Most of the developed techniques involving HSPA capacity are related to the system operation. This approach is specially useful when the network planner tries to evaluate how the system works, however, it is not the case when the mobile network operator is doing the business plan and whise to evaluate the return of investment. This paper provides a simple and novel methodology for estimating the additional investment required to provide High Speed Down-link Packet Access (HSDPA) in a 3G mobile network given a user service profile. This method is useful for techno-economic studies for mobile operators, consulting firms and national regulatory agencies.

Access and Mobility Policy Control at the Network Edge

The fifth generation (5G) system architecture is defined as service-based and the core network functions are described as sets of services accessible through application programming interfaces (API). One of the components of 5G is Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) which provides the open access to radio network functions through API. Using the mobile edge API third party analytics applications ...

An Overview of Group Key Management Issues in IEEE 802.16e Networks

The computer industry has defined the IEEE 802.16 family of standards that will enable mobile devices to access a broadband network as an alternative to digital subscriber line technology. As the mobile devices join and leave a network, security measures must be taken to ensure the safety of the network against unauthorized usage by encryption and group key management. IEEE 802.16e uses Multica...

HSPA Evolution – Boosting the performance of mobile broadband access

Today, 84% of all reported global cellular subscribers make calls via radio access technology specifi ed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This signifi es that WCDMA is the predominant thirdgeneration (3G) radio network technology, and as such, represents a substantial economy of scale. In addition, the recent introduction of high-speed packet access (HSPA, 3GPP Release 6) has...

The challenges and opportunities of delivering wireless high speed broadband services in Rural and Remote Australia: A Case Study of Western Downs Region (WDR)

This paper critically assesses wireless broadband internet infrastructure, in the rural and remote communities of WDR in terms of supply, demand and utilisation. Only 8 of 20 towns have ADSL/ADSL2+, and only 3 towns have 4G mobile network coverage. Conversely all of the towns have 2G/3G mobile network coverage but have problems with speed, reliability of service and capacity to handle data traf...

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks

With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...
